Taylor Swift introduced herself as country superstar when she unveiled her eponymous debut studio album in 2006. After releasing eight years worth of material and dropping subtle hints at a genre makeover, the 24-year-old is officially going all pop for her upcoming 1989 album, which is due on October 27.
In the “Shake It Off” singer-songwriter’s cover story for British Vogue‘s October issue, the hit-maker graces the front page in a knitted tank top with her blonde bob slicked back and opens up about the rebirth of her music.
“This time around I’ve chosen the brave and bold way of going about things,” she tells the fashion magazine. “Because with this album [1989] I’ve completely changed the sound of everything I’ve done until now. So it’s interesting to not be afraid of that. You know, I don’t want to hurt people’s feelings, I don’t want to betray Nashville, whatever, but essentially it comes down to challenging yourself as an artist.”
Taylor’s past albums told stories of romantic relationships and retrospective breakups that were inspired by her past beaus. In concert with the shift of her musical direction, the “You Belong With Me” singer, who dated One Direction‘s Harry Styles, John Mayer, and Conor Kennedy, also has a new perspective on dating due to her massive success.
“Dating or finding someone is the last thing on my mind, because I can’t picture how it could work with the way my life is,” the “22” singer admits. “I don’t know how a guy is supposed to walk next to his girlfriend when there are 20 men with cameras, and he can’t protect his girlfriend because that’s the life she chose. I just don’t see how it could work, so I don’t think about it, and I kind of run from it when it presents itself. ‘Cause I don’t think any guy really … They think that they would want to get to know me, and maybe date me, but I don’t think they want what comes with it.”
The full interview will be available for iPad users on Friday, October 3, and the hardcopy hits newsstands nationwide on Monday, October 6. Head over to Vogue for more information by clicking here.
